OXFORD BROOKES AND OPEN ENERGI TEAM UP TO SOLVE UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE
Oxford Brookes is the first university in the UK to take advantage of a new partnership between Open Energi and Prefect Controls to unlock flexible capacity from student accommodation.
Prefect Controls specialises in energy management systems for buildings with a variable occupancy pattern and its Prefectirus system helps Oxford Brookes to manage energy consumption from equipment used by students, such as heaters and hot water tanks, more efficiently.
Thanks to the partnership, Open Energi is able to communicate with this equipment via Prefect Controls’ network in order to automatically and invisibly shift energy demand in real-time, so that National Grid can better manage fluctuations in supply and demand across the country.
Oxford Brookes started by trialling the technology across 5 water tanks providing hot water to 30 student rooms. Following this success, it has signed a 10-year contract to become the first university in the UK to adopt Demand Side Response (DSR) through the partnership. The university is now planning to integrate DSR across a total of 71 tanks with a second phase planned to target 300 panel heaters across its campus, representing over 700kW in total.
